Progress made in Honduras
Are the presented results reliable?
The NGO ALBOAN and ERIC-Radio Progreso share their concerns regarding the optimistic figures presented in the third report on the progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Honduras. The last report published by the UN was in 1997; hence the impact of the economic and financial crisis is not taken into account, which is also related to the institutional crisis the country is experiencing since the coup d´ état that took place in June 2009.
It is worth highlighting certain figures, such as the slight improvement of Honduras on the Human Development Index (HDI) scale (published last week) despite being below the Latin American and World averages. Regarding the Human Opportunity Index, an indicator which measures the access to basic services, it is worth highlighting a two point fall compared to the latest figure of 2008.
ALBOAN and ERIC-Radio Progreso will continue to offer information and their views on these reports and results in order to provide critical elements for an analysis of the Honduran reality.
